Chris De Burgh releases his new, 27th studio album in 2021 and dedicates it to a real legend: “The Legend Of Robin Hood“.
De Burgh and the legendary hero, who owes his fame to numerous late medieval to early modern English ballad cycles, and later many literary and cinematic adaptations, also have a special connection: Chris’ ancestor Hubert de Burgh (1170-1243) was under King John Ohneland, who plays an important role in the Robin Hood story, as chief justiciar one of the most influential politicians in England and Ireland.
And so the musician was inspired by the many legends, matured over centuries, about the noble robber and highwayman who takes the side of good.
The starting point for the record was the work on the musical of the same name, the premiere of which had to be postponed to 2022 due to a pandemic. The idea for the musical came to the Irish singer and composer several years ago.
“When I was writing the musical, I thought: why not use some of the songs I wrote, eight in number, in my own project. So I wrote my own little story,” the musician said in a video statement about the album.
This is called “The Legend Of Robin Hood” and includes a whole 22 pieces. Chris De Burgh presents himself as a troubadour and entertaining storyteller and combines gripping storytelling with great, excitingly orchestrated melodies and emotional depth.
