Alone in the universe? At least without a band

It has been 14 years since there was last musical news from ELO (Electric Light Orchestra). in 2015, their band founder, frontman, lead singer, guitarist, songwriter and producer Jeff Lynne is back with new songs. “Jeff Lynne’s ELO” is the name of the project, “Alone In The Universe” the album.

In 2001 they had released their last album “Zoom“, after which it became quiet around the British rock band. It was only many years later that BBC radio DJ Chris Evans invited Lynne to his show, where, with the support of listeners, he asked him to go on tour once again. The latter followed the request and shortly after, in September 2014, found himself in London’s Hyde Park for a gig. However, of the original ELO members, only Jeff Lynne and keyboardist Richard Tandy were on stage.

Encouraged by the success of the concert, Lynne decided to record a new ELO album as a one-man band, so to speak, because he plays all the instruments on it, even sings the background vocals himself, on which he is supported only in some songs by his daughter. A total of ten songs came together since autumn 2014 and can now be heard on “Alone In The Universe“.

In September and October there were already two preview tracks with “When I Was a Boy” and “When The Night Comes”, which give a good impression of the album: modern pop rock songs in the best ELO tradition. Jeff’s uniquely clear voice seems to have remained completely untouched by the passage of time. That the debut single definitely shows parallels with the Beatles and his good friend George Harrison is irrefutable.
