When Martin Tingvall released his first solo album „en ny dag” in 2012, he presented another new facet, namely the quiet side of his artistic work. The ZEIT praised the album as „intimate, restrained, movingly beautiful” and stated „Tingvall collects jazz fans where Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea once left them …”
The poetry with which Martin Tingvall touched his listeners struck a chord with an audience that wanted to avoid superlatives for a moment. And the German feuilleton answered the question of whether this was jazz or classical music by saying that this music knows no division according to genre and is just as close to Edvard Grieg as Chick Corea’s Children’s Songs.
On „Distance„, Martin Tingvall consistently continued along this path and the new solo work „The Rocket” is now characterized by even more weightlessness and lightness, without ever slipping into the trivial. The traditional distribution between the right and left hand becomes blurred, the left hand plays the melody on an equal footing with the right hand and vice versa. The pianist, who lives in Hamburg and southern Sweden, describes this floating through new worlds of sound as a rocket exploring an unknown orbit.
Martin Tingvall, who is equally at home in genres such as film music, classical music, jazz and pop, plays seemingly simple-sounding, hauntingly beautiful melodies on this album, which sometimes conjure up associations with classical music, sometimes reflect his origins in Scandinavian folk music and at other times are close to the improvisational freedom of jazz. He has long since left common genre boundaries behind him and created his very own Tingvall sound world from various sources of inspiration.
