With New Masters, Cat Stevens released his second album in 1967, the same year as his debut. However, some artistic differences had emerged between Cat, who had begun to yearn for a simpler acoustic sound and more artistic control over his career, and producer Mike Hurst.

New Masters includes „The First Cut is the Deepest,” which would later become one of the most groundbreaking Heartbreak songs of all time, with notable cover versions by Rod Stewart, Sheryl Crow and Keith Hampshire.

The album now appears on vinyl for the first time since 1982, remastered at Abbey Road Studios with improved vocals and original artwork.
