Genesis’ tenth studio album, Duke, came after the band’s longest break between LP releases. But if they were worried two years after …And Then There Were Three… They needn’t have worried about the reaction of their audience. Duke, released on March 28, 1980, became Genesis’ most successful album to date and their first UK No. 1. It reached the US charts on April 26, peaking at No. 11, another career high to that point.
On the album, Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford continued to explore the more pop-oriented side of their sound, especially on the hits “Turn It On Again” and the Collins composition “Misunderstanding”. But there was still enough for their progressive fanbase to sink their teeth into.
Five of the 12 tracks on Duke were band collaborations, crediting all three as writers, while Banks added three solo and Rutherford and Collins two each. The album was recorded towards the end of 1979 at Polar Studios, the famous home of the ABBA sound in Stockholm, and produced by Genesis with David Hentschel.
Duke surpassed all its predecessors by reaching the top of the UK charts in its first week of release, overtaking the Johnny Mathis album Tears and Laughter. It stayed for a second week, recording eight consecutive weeks in the Top 5 and 30 in the Top 75, with the band’s previous best being Number 3, achieved by Selling England By The Pound, A Trick Of The Tail and …And Then There Were Three…. The album only took until July to go platinum in the UK. It also reached a new personal best in the States, going platinum there in 1988.
Genesis’ powerful 1980 studio release includes the enduring ‘Duke Suite’ with the emotional centerpiece ‘Duchess’.
