Jean-Luc Ponty activated important guest musicians for his 1983 release „Individual Choice„: UK guitarist Allan Holdsworth and Zappa keyboardist George Duke, as well as Randy Jackson on bass and Rayford Griffin on drums. However, they really don’t have more than guest roles; they don’t all play together on any of the tracks.

Essentially recorded by Ponty himself, of course with the help of the violin, but above all with the use of keyboard, sequencer and computer technology, to which he devoted himself in such detail for the first time on a LP.

The result is a record that sounds so typical of the time it was made that the title „Individual Choice” seems almost unintentionally strange. The album offers a sterile 80s sound aesthetic that is pure poison for jazz rock: over long stretches it turns into such a sterile jingle that one can hardly speak of „jazz” anymore and of rock certainly not, more of a New Age sound. Not much remains of the announced “individual choice”. This is most noticeable in the longest piece, „In Spiritual Love”, to which George Duke contributed a mini Moog solo.

The only piece in the full band arrangement (but without Duke) is the last one: „In Spite of All”. It’s recorded without keyboards or computers, but somehow the spirit of chips and circuits has spread to this traditional quartet of violin, guitar, bass and drums. The track is a bit more driving, but it doesn’t seem really lively either.
