The ten new songs on this highly anticipated album certainly represent a high point in the work of the influential singer/songwriter and man of letters.

Although the actual recording of „Old Ideas” didn’t begin until January 2011, Cohen had been working on the songs and lyrics for years. Two of the tracks, „The Darkness” and „Lullaby,” were recorded as early as 2007, and early versions were heard as part of the recently concluded sold-out world tour.

The 77-year-old Canadian gave some hints of what fans can expect from the new album back in October in Oviedo at this year’s „Prince of Asturias” awards ceremony. Leonard Cohen had received the highest Spanish literary award there. „As I grew older, I understood that with that voice came instructions. And those instructions are… never just whine. But should anyone need to express that great, inevitable defeat that awaits us all at some point, it should always be done within the strict rules of dignity and beauty.”

The album was produced by Patrick Leonard, Anjani Thomas, Ed Sanders and Dino Soldo. Cohen is joined by prominent background singers such as Dana Glover, Sharon Robinson, the Webb Sisters and Jennifer Warnes. The cover design and all drawings in the booklet are by Cohen himself.
