„Monument” is appropriately chosen as the title for the third album by Molchat Doma, a band formed in 2017 in Minsk, Belarus. In fact, the name is symbolic of everything the musicians have accomplished as a group in a short time. There are just three years between their rise from enigmatic insider tip to viral TikTok meme. Since then, the post-punk/synthpop/new wave band has been one of the key bands of the Belarusian post-punk scene.
„Monument” was written and recorded in their hometown of Minsk during quarantine. Molchat Doma have noticeably refined their craft on their third long player. The songwriting has become stronger, the arrangements are more sophisticated. Roman Komogortsev and Pavel Kozlov’s arsenal of equipment has been expanded to include a wide range of synthesizers and drum machines, which are operated with precision by the musicians.
Egor Shkutko’s vocals move fluidly between his signature deadpan drawl and an expressive, lulling calm. His beautiful lyrics, delivered in Russian, are somber and romantic at the same time. With „Monument” Molchat Doma have achieved one of the most difficult things as a band ever. They have greatly expanded the scope of their music while maintaining everything that made them great from the beginning.
