Norah Jones rediscovers the piano

It’s been four years since Norah Jones released her last solo album, three since her collaboration with Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong. With „Day Breaks,” the U.S. soul and jazz singer, pianist and songwriter finally presents a new album in 2016, her sixth by now.

She recorded a total of twelve songs for it. In addition to nine of her own compositions, „Day Breaks” also contains three cover versions, namely of Neil Young’s „Don’t Be Denied”, Horace Silver’s „Peace” and Duke Ellington’s „Fleurette Africaine (African Flower)”.

With „Carry On” Jones already presented the first single of the new album at the beginning of August. The soulful, relaxed piano song shows that the jazz and soul singer is returning to her musical beginnings. She composed all nine songs on the piano instead of on the guitar, as she has been doing more and more frequently of late. The sound is therefore very reminiscent of her successful debut „Come Away with Me” from 2002.

Norah Jones received support in the studio from some renowned musicians. Brian Blade and Karriem Riggins sat behind the drums, John Patitucci played bass, Tony Scherr guitar, Lonnie Smith Hammond organ and Wayne Shorter saxophone – just to name a few.
