In January 1977, Pink Floyd released their tenth studio album „Animals”.
The album reached number 1 in the German charts and is considered one of their best – and now, 45 years later, it is being re-released as a deluxe gatefold edition, CD, LP and Blu-ray. For the first time ever, the album will be available in 5.1 surround sound. The individual versions will be available from September 16, 2022, with the deluxe version following on October 7.
„Animals” is a concept album that takes a critical look at the socio-political conditions in mid-1970s Britain, marking a departure from the style of the band’s earlier work. From a collection of originally unrelated songs, Pink Floyd developed a concept that described the obvious social and moral decay of society. Inspired by George Orwell’s „Animal Farm”, they visualize human nature with an analogy to the animal kingdom and divide people into three classes of animals: The pigs are at the top of the social chain, the sheep do as they are told as a mindless herd, and the dogs are the business bosses who shamelessly enrich themselves from profit and their power over others. A lot of time has passed since 1977 – and then not at all, because the album’s narrative has lost none of its topicality as a commentary on our social and economic situation
The famous cover of „Animals” shows an inflatable pig (now known as Algie) floating at lofty heights between two chimneys at Battersea Power Station in London. The idea for the cover came from Roger Waters, while the band’s long-time creative partner Storm Thorgerson from Hipgnosis Studios was responsible for its realization. For the current re-release, Storm’s Hipgnosis partner Aubrey „Po” Powell has redesigned the artwork for the present day. Based on new shots of the building during the recent remodeling work (the former power station is being converted for cultural and commercial use, designed by Frank Gehry and Norman Foster), Po experimented with new angles and created some stunning new versions of the famous original. Po says: „The original 1977 album cover is iconic and stands so much on its own that I had a lot of respect for giving it an update. But Hipgnosis took the opportunity to re-photograph the motif to reflect a changing world. By using modern digital coloring techniques, I was able to retain Pink Floyd’s dark message of moral decay, and the Orwellian animal analogy in the form of Algie the pig lives on in the new artwork.”
