Queen’s twelfth album, A Kind Of Magic, was released in 1986 during a renaissance in progressive rock music. Both Genesis and their former lead singer Peter Gabriel aspired to the heights of Messrs. May, Mercury, Deacon and Taylor were delighted to return to the top of the British charts with a double platinum album.
A Kind Of Magic has a conceptual background, as it was the unofficial soundtrack for Highlander, the film by Australian director Russell Mulcahy. The movie came out a few months earlier than the album, which contains several songs that accompany the plot and one, „Princes Of The Universe”, which is the theme song.
In the U.S., the album only made it to #42 on the Billboard charts, with the best international placement coming in the UK at #3.
