„Crash Of The Crown” is the new album from Styx, the first since „The Mission” from 2017 and the 17th studio album of the rock icons ever.
The album consists of 15 tracks and is modern and timeless at the same time. Although „Crash Of The Crown” is released in 2021, it deals with dark themes from various decades such as 1066, 1455, 1775, 1861, 1941 and 2001. Nevertheless, the positive aspect is the focus of Styx’s new project. They always try to focus on the light at the end of the tunnel and reflect this behavior on their fans.
The work on the new album began already in the fall of 2019 in the studio of Lawrence Gowan. Actually, they wanted to record the songs together as usual – however, the still rampant Covid-19 pandemic intervened, the project had to pause for the time being. Later they started to record as socially distanced as possible – and when there was more than one person in the recording room, they recorded under the most careful safety precautions and with regular corona tests.
Lyrically, the long player deals with the history of mankind – the fall and rise again, human and historical. Even though the band touches on political issues, they don’t define themselves as a protest band: „We’ve never been a protest band. We’re more like a gospel caravan, trying to spread positive messages wherever we go,” Tommy Shaw explains, continuing, „To spread those positive messages, you have to look at the problems first, to figure out how you can help fix everything. That’s a very important part of what we do.”
