“The Magician’s Birthday“, first appeared in November 1972 and shows a band that has matured within a very short time.

“The Magician’s Birthday” is loosely based on a short story written by Ken Hensley, guitarist, keyboardist and songwriter for the band, shortly before the recording sessions. In addition to the single “Sweet Lorraine,” one of the band’s best-known songs, the 10-minute title track stands out, featuring an extended guitar solo by Mick Box.

“The Magician’s Birthday” was the second album in the line-up Byron / Box / Hensley / Thain / Kerslake and shows the band more versed and playful than ever before.
