Oldschool – fresh sound
Nena stands for a great piece of German pop culture. In the eighties, Nena had big hits that could also storm the charts internationally. She broke ground for German-language pop and the New German Wave. In the single „? (question mark)”, which was released in 1983, she still claimed: „Yesterday, that’s not for me”.
Today, over thirty years later, the new album „Oldschool” seems to be almost all about the past. The track listing sounds clear: „Songs from the past”, „Berufsjugendlich” or „Peter Pan” are the titles. Overall, however, „Oldschool” is not about nostalgia. Nena’s topic is time itself, how to deal with it and how to live completely in the here and now.
The fact that the album also sounds like the here and now in terms of sound is mainly due to Samy Deluxe’s producer work. After a meeting with Nena, Samy Deluxe was so inspired that a whole album could eventually grow out of initial song ideas. „I knew in that second,” Nena describes the beginning of the recordings, „that this can only be something good.”
Sammy Deluxe is also enthusiastic: „It’s not just that Nena is oldschool … Nena is oldschool and still fully relevant. She can embody everything from punk rock to the most beautiful ballads and always remains authentic.” And Sammy Deluxe dressed the album in appropriate sounds. Electro beats, driving guitar pop, bass-heavy bangers, melancholy earworms and also snotty punk attitude – all this can be heard on „Oldschool„.
