According to Ozzy Osbourne’s memoirs, Tony Iommi, who was also responsible for the album’s production, had issued the directive „you have to sound more like Foreigner or Queen!” What provided the already bad-tempered Osbourne from then on with thoughts of the band exit.
In England the punk revolution had just broken out, as a heavy metal act felt disoriented. In the neighboring studio in Miami, The Eagles recorded their album „Hotel California”, but only in the use of cocaine they found a common ground. The British magazine MOJO aptly summed up the musical result: „Technical Ecstasy is the sound of Sabbath trying to make a grown-up, radio-friendly rock record and, in some parts, it works! The cover of the graphic agency Hipgnosis, on the other hand, became legendary. Asked about its meaning, Osbourne says, „two robots screwing on an escalator!”
