Inner strength, that’s what we need if we want to make real change on this planet. Gojira titled their upcoming album the same way, “Fortitude.” The French band’s first album since the two-time Grammy-nominated “Magma” five years ago will be released in April 2021.

As if they’ve shed their skin and uncovered a shell underneath, “Born For One Thing” represents a natural progression for the universally lauded French band: hyper-focused yet unhinged, feisty yet compassionate. “We have to learn to detach from everything, starting with actual things,” says vocalist/guitarist Joe Duplantier of the song’s anti-consumerism message, inspired in part by the Tibetan and Thai philosophers he read when he was growing up in France. “Accumulate fewer possessions and give away what you don’t need, because one day we’ll have to part with everything, and if we don’t, we’ll just become ghosts caught between dimensions.”

Recorded and produced by Joe Duplantier at Silver Cord Studio – Gojira’s headquarters in Ridgewood, Queens – and mixed by Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine), “Fortitude” is a collection of songs that urge us humans to imagine a new world – and then turn it into reality. The band laid the initial foundation for the album last year with the surprise release of their single “Another World.” “Fortitude” continues Gojira’s long-standing tradition of using their music as a vehicle for environmental activism, in songs like “Amazonia” and “The Chant” that not only survey critical cases but encourage listeners to take action themselves.
