The recording at Sony Studios in New York takes place on August 9, 1995. First the current Stanley / Simmons / Kulick / Singer line-up sits on the cool illuminated and decked out stage, in the background made-up dolls with the costumes of yesteryear and (of course) a big illuminated Kiss logo. On the setlist there are a lot of seventies treasures from the second row: Comin’ Home from 1974, for example, the band had almost never played live outside the conventions, as well as Goin’ Blind (1974), Plaster Caster (1977) and Sure Know Something (1979). Even from the much-maligned The Elder album World Without Heroes resounds, from Gene’s 1978 solo album See You Tonite – a feast for the hardcore fans.
Then, just before the end, Paul Stanley declares, „We have some family members here today: Peter Criss and Ace Frehley!” As expected, the fans go wild, the two alumni take Bruce and Eric’s places – and off they go with the Stones cover 2,000 Man, sung by Ace. Thus the legendary original line-up plays 23 years after the first rehearsal together, 16 years after the last concert together again on one stage – and for the very first time without the war paint (if you don’t count Ace’s wedding in 1976). Peter then sings the biggest Kiss hit (commercially speaking), the ballad Beth, in a cool acoustic version.
But to make it clear that no cast facts are being created here via time travel, Eric and Bruce return – and Kiss still play Nothin’ To Lose (with lead vocals from both drummers) and the evergreen bouncer Rock’n’Roll All Nite with six (!) members. A dream for the Kiss Army.
