Re-release of Moby’s fifth studio album.

Originally released in 1999, it became the most successful indie album of the year and went platinum in over 20 countries. With „Play,” Moby changed his approach once again. He took samples from folk and gospel – many of which came from Alan Lomax’s archive – and combined them with his electronic soundscapes. In the process, he cuts loops out of the samples that he repeats endlessly: Bessie Jones’ „Sometimes” is repeated over 20 times in „Honey” and so he unfolds the hypnotic pull that made this song a hit.

Upon its release, many Moby fans who had expected a techno album turned away, and the album failed to make a significant appearance on the charts. It was to take over ten months before the tide turned and the album became an absolute hit. With 9 (!) singles and countless licenses to TV shows, movies and commercials, the album became a perennial hit and has sold well over 12 million units to date.
