Before the prog metal band Threshold celebrates the 30th anniversary of their debut album next year, they first quickly put down one of the genre highlights of the year with “Dividing Lines“.
Whereby “fast” is a misleading term here, after all, since the previous album “Legends Of The Shires” a whopping five years have gone by. But good things take time and music that is as demanding and catchy as Threshold’s at the same time will also be a special challenge for the composers.
After all, band leader and sole remaining founding member Karl Groom has not had to compensate for any personnel changes in recent years. That is, also singer Glynn Morgan, who had recorded the predecessor and also already the 1994 album “Psychedelicatessen“, can be heard again on “Dividing Lines“.
On “Legends Of The Shires” the quintet still took care of a complex lyrical concept on double album length. The ten new songs, on the other hand, are considerably slimmed down in this respect and follow only a loose thread of content. “‘Legends’ had more of a message of redemption, while ‘Dividing Lines‘ has a harder narrative – it’s more of a collection of cautionary tales,” explains keyboardist Richard West. “There’s a political commentary woven in. In that respect, it reminds me a little of our 2004 album ‘Subsurface,’ which featured songs like ‘Mission Profile,’ ‘Art Of Reason,’ and ‘Opium,’ which dealt with issues like propaganda, censorship, and corruption.”
Despite these unpalatable themes underlying the new album, however, Richard West can also find uplifting added value in “Dividing Lines“: “If there’s a positive message from the album, it’s to stay true to yourself, trust your heart and not get carried away by what’s going on around you. But we live in uncertain times, and the overall mood of the album reflects that.”
