„Pawn Hearts” was originally released in October 1971 on Charisma Records. It is the fourth long player of the English band, the successor of „H To He, Who Am The Only One” from 1970.

The original album contains only three tracks, including the page-long suite „A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers” with parts A to J. The songs were worked out during a tour in 1971 and further developed and arranged at the home of manager Tony Stratton-Smith in Crowborough, Sussex, over a period of two months. Recording took place at Trident Studios from July to September 1971. In addition to the band and producer John Anthony, Robin Cable, David Hentschel and Ken Scott also helped with the engineering.

„Pawn Hearts” was not very successful in Great Britain, but in retrospect it was praised again and again by the critics. More than that, it is now considered one of the seminal albums of the progressive era. In Italy it landed at number one in the album charts at the time.
