On June 12, 1989, Martin L. Gore released debut “Counterfeit EP”, which allowed the true creative mastermind of the band to be in the foreground for a change.
in 2021, he reissues the mini-album as 180-g vinyl.
The record gathers six cover songs, hence the name, which implies that the songs were not written by Gore. They are pieces by Joe Crow, Tuxedomoon, The Durutti Column, The Comsat Angels, Sparks and a traditional.
“Counterfeit EP” was recorded during a band break after recording and touring for the Depeche Mode album “Music For The Masses” (1987). Gore handled the production himself, along with Rico Conning at Sam Therapy Studios in London. Although the release has the letters “EP” in the title, it was given an album catalog number by Mute Records.
In France and Germany the song “In A Manner Of Speaking” was released as a promo single.
