All the years they had spent building their UK fan base reached critical mass for INXS in 1992. After three consecutive Top 10 albums in the UK, they wasted no time with the new album Welcome To Wherever You Are, which immediately hit #1 there on August 15 of that year.
The Australian band’s two previous studio albums had both reached platinum status in the UK – 1987’s Kick even went triple platinum, during a chart span of just over two years. Welcome To Wherever You Are, INXS’ eighth studio album, was an ambitious affair with a 60-piece orchestra, but at the same time a return to rock’s roots.
The omens for the new album weren’t the best in the U.K., with lead single „Heaven Sent” reaching only No. 31 in July, despite becoming a huge rock radio favorite in the United States. But another track on the LP, „Not Enough Time,” got them great attention on Various Artists’ new release „Barcelona Gold,” which coincided with the opening of the Summer Olympics that same month. This track became a top 30 hit in America.
The INXS album, produced by the band together with their former producer Mark Opitz, hit the stores in the last week of the Olympics. In the UK (as well as in Sweden), it immediately surpassed the results in their home country. The album went straight to No. 1, displacing Neil Diamond’s Greatest Hits 1966-1992, and lasted a total of 33 weeks on the UK charts, the last time it was heard a year and a week after its debut.
„Baby Don’t Cry” reached No. 20 as a U.K. single in September, and there were other Top 30 hits with „Taste It” and „Beautiful Girl.”
